Hyperpigmentation is the term for areas of the skin that appear darker than the surrounding tissue.

This condition occurs when there is an excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. Hyperpigmentation can manifest in several forms, such as sun spots, age spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from acne or other skin conditions.

These darkened spots often give the skin an uneven tone, which can be particularly noticeable on the face, hands, or décolletage.

Why it happens

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces an excess of melanin due to various factors. Sun exposure is the leading cause, as UV rays stimulate melanin production, resulting in sun spots or age spots. Hormonal changes, such as those during pregnancy (often referred to as pregnancy mask) or with the use of oral contraceptives, can lead to melasma.

Inflammation caused by acne, skin injuries, or other skin conditions can also trigger an overproduction of melanin in the affected area, leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Other contributing factors include genetics, certain medications, and environmental stressors.

The treatments

To effectively treat hyperpigmentation, I offer a combination of advanced treatments tailored to your skin’s unique needs:

  • Laser Treatments for Hyperpigmentation: I use advanced laser technology to target specific pigmented areas, breaking down excess melanin and promoting the regeneration of healthy skin. This method is particularly effective for treating sun spots, age spots, and acne scars.
  • Chemical Peels: Chemical peels exfoliate the skin to remove the outer layers, revealing smoother, more even-toned skin underneath. This process helps to fade dark spots and reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation caused by sun exposure or acne.
  • Topical Skincare: I recommend higher-strength skincare products that can accelerate the fading of hyperpigmented areas. Ingredients like vitamin C, retinoids, and hydroquinone are used to lighten dark spots, even out skin tone, and prevent further pigmentation from developing.

Each of these treatments targets hyperpigmentation at its source, promoting a balanced, radiant complexion over time.

Recovery time

Recovery from hyperpigmentation treatments is generally quick. You may experience mild redness or irritation following treatment, which typically fades within a few hours. Some patients may notice slight peeling or dryness in the days after treatment, especially with chemical peels. Full results from laser treatments and peels typically improve progressively, with optimal outcomes visible after several sessions. Most patients can resume their normal activities right after the treatment.

My approach

I take a personalised and holistic approach to treating hyperpigmentation. Whether you’re dealing with sun damage, melasma, acne scars, or other forms of pigmentation, I aim to restore an even skin tone by applying my knowledge of the skin. My approach is centred on creating a comfortable, effective treatment experience with long-lasting results.
